What is Route Permit and How To Get Rout Permit in Pakistan

Route Permit is a legal document of vehicle that is issued by relevant regional transport authority (RTA) or provincial transport authority (PTA) that permits a vehicle especially a commercial or public transport vehicle to operate on assigned routes within or across provinces.

Vehicle Route Permits Types:

There are 5 types of route permits in Pakistan. The detail is as under:

  • Stage Carriage Permit: This type of permit is for buses that are operating on fixed routes. Commonly used for public transportation systems.
  • Contract Carriage Permit: This type of route permit is allow such vehicles to operate that hired a whole i.e. private vans, taxis or tourist buses.
  • Goods Carriage Permit: This permit is for vehicles that are transporting goods i.e. trucks and lorries.
  • Temporary Permit: This type of permit is issued for short term operations such as events or seasonal need.
  • Inter-Province / National Permits: This route permit is for vehicles that are operating across provincial boundaries or nationwide.

Route Permits Fee:

The fee for a route permit varies by type of vehicle and region. The government set the fee from time to time. Each province has a different route permit fee, details of which can be obtained from the provincial transport authority’s website or office.

How To Get Route Permit:

Requirements for a Vehicle Route Permit:

If you are a transport owner and want to get a route permit then you have to fulfill following requirement to obtain a route permit.

  • Registration Documents: Valid registration book / certificate of the vehicle
  • Fitness Certificate: To ensure that vehicle is fit and roadworthy.
  • Insurance Documents: Proof of valid motor vehicle insurance.
  • Road Tax Clearance: To prove that all taxes are paid and record is up to date.
  • Driving License: Valid commercial driving license of the driver.
  • Permit Fee: Payment receipt / proof of the prescribed application / permit fee.

Procedure to Get Vehicle Route Permits

First of all you have to submit an application to the respective regional or provincial transport authority. Make sure the application form is filled out properly and all details about the vehicle owner, vehicle specifications and intended route must be filled out accurately.

Must attach all required documents (mentioned above) with the application form.

After submitting the application for route permit, vehicle may be inspected to make sure compliance with regulatory and safety standards.

After checking of application form and all details mentioned in the form, all required documents, inspection and other formalities the relevant authority will approve the required route permit.

Once the respective authority approved, the route permit will be issued specifying vehicle’s operational route and validity period.  

Validity & Renewal of Route Permit:

The duration of route permit in Pakistan depends on the type of route permit and the province. Route permits can be valid for one year, three year or five years. Usually, the expiration date of the route permit is written on it.

Penalities:

Route permit should be renewed one month before. If failed to renew, a late fee may be charged if the permit is not renewed on time. In Pakistan Provincial or Regional Transport Authorities, City Traffic Police and Motorway Police can check vehicle route permits. If you are operating a vehicle without valid route permit can result in penalties, vehicle impound or legal action.
